Privacy Policy, Terms of Service, and Referral Program. Use the links below to jump to a section.
Privacy Policy
1.1 Data we collect and how we use it
We collect data that is necessary to provide the service, manage quotas, prevent abuse, and comply with law. This may include:
- Device identifier (device_id): Used to bind your device to your usage, manage book-creation quota, and prevent abuse (e.g. multiple devices claiming free tier).
- Registration information: If you sign in with Apple or Google, or register with email or phone, we receive the identifying information you provide (e.g. email) for account management and to contact you when needed.
- Usage data: Number of books you have created, OCR and translation and AI request counts per book, and similar metrics. We use this for quota enforcement, abuse prevention, and service improvement. We do not store the actual images or book content on our servers (local-first design).
Purposes: Providing the Read For Kids service, managing free and paid quotas and referral rewards, preventing abuse and fraud, improving the product, and meeting legal obligations. We do not use your personal data for marketing unrelated to the service, and we do not sell your personal data to third parties.
1.2 Your right to delete account and data
You have the right to request deletion of your account and personal data. In the app, go to Settings → Account & data → Delete my account / data. The flow will ask for confirmation, explain what will be removed and what (if any) minimal information we may retain, and link to this Privacy Policy.
What we delete: When you delete your account, we remove your account information, usage records, and any server-side records of your books and content. On your device, the app will also clear local books, settings, and related data as part of the same flow.
Abuse-prevention retention (“one-time free tier”): To prevent abuse of the free tier (e.g. repeatedly deleting and re-registering to get free books again), we may retain only minimal, de-identified information: a one-way cryptographic hash of your device identifier or, if you registered, of your email or phone number. This hash cannot be reversed to identify you. We use it solely to check whether that identifier has already used the free tier. We do not retain your usage history, book list, or any other data that can identify you. If you use the same device or same email/phone again, you will not receive the free tier again. Where the law requires a legal basis, we rely on legitimate interest (prevention of abuse).
1.3 Data retention and security
We keep personal data only as long as needed for operations and legal requirements. After your deletion request is completed, we remove your data from our systems within a reasonable period. De-identified hashes used for abuse prevention (if any) may be kept indefinitely; the legal basis is legitimate interest (abuse prevention), and we do not use them to identify you.
We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your data. No system is completely secure. If we become aware of a breach affecting your personal data, we will act in accordance with applicable law (including any required notifications).
1.4 Children’s privacy
The service is intended for use by parents and caregivers. In “kids mode” we do not track children’s behavior or collect analytics on children. Access to in-app purchases, external links, and sensitive settings is gated (e.g. by PIN or parent verification). Where laws such as COPPA or GDPR apply to children’s data, we aim to comply with applicable requirements.
1.5 Use of third-party AI (OpenAI)
When you use features such as "read this page" (text extraction from a photo) or "Q&A" (interactive questions about the page), we send the scanned page image and/or the page text to OpenAI through our own backend. This is used only to provide (a) text extraction and optional translation, and (b) generation of age-appropriate reading questions. We do not use this data for advertising, and we do not sell it to third parties. Data is transmitted over secure channels; OpenAI processes it according to their Privacy Policy and Terms of Use. We do not use OpenAI's API to train their models on your content (per our configuration and OpenAI's API terms). If you do not want your scanned pages or page text sent to OpenAI, do not use the "read this page" or "Q&A" features.
1.6 Cross-border and other third parties
We may use servers or other third-party services (e.g. analytics, crash reporting) outside your country. Where we do, we use appropriate safeguards (e.g. contracts and technical measures). For questions about where your data is processed, see Contact.
1.7 Your rights
You have the right to request deletion of your account and data as described above (in-app: Settings → Account & data → Delete my account / data). Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have additional rights (e.g. access, correction, or complaint to a supervisor). For those requests, contact us as set out in Contact.
Terms of Service
2.1 Service description and acceptance
By using Read For Kids (“the Service”), you agree to these Terms. The Service is designed to be used only when you own or lawfully possess the physical book. It is intended to pair with the physical book (e.g. your child holds the book while the app reads aloud). You must have lawful possession or the right to use the books you scan. You may not use the Service for commercial reproduction, copyright infringement, pornography, or any other illegal purpose. We are not responsible for any misuse or infringement by you. If we detect abuse or violation of these Terms, we may suspend or terminate your account without prior notice.
2.2 Permitted use, quotas, and fair use
- Book-creation quota, per-book page limits, and AI usage per book are shown in the then-current free or paid plan in the app. You may not exceed these limits.
- We may apply rate limits to prevent automated or abusive use. Exceeding them may result in temporary or permanent restriction.
- We may change plans, quotas, or features as needed. Material changes will be communicated via the app, email (if you have registered), or other reasonable means. Continued use after the change constitutes acceptance.
2.3 AI and content disclaimer
AI analysis, recognition, translation, and generated content (including interactive Q&A) are for reference and entertainment only. We do not guarantee 100% accuracy or completeness. You may not use the Service for illegal, infringing, pornographic, or commercial reproduction. You are solely responsible for your use of the Service and any content you create or share. We are not liable for any third-party claims or disputes arising from your use. We may suspend or terminate your account if we detect abuse.
2.4 In-app purchases and subscriptions
If you make in-app purchases or subscriptions, those are governed by the platform’s terms (Apple App Store or Google Play). Refunds are handled by the platform. If you delete your Read For Kids account, we do not refund purchases; any entitlements you have (e.g. subscription or extra book quota) remain tied to your device or platform account and can be restored via the platform after reinstalling the app. We do not erase or “reset” your purchase history when you delete your account.
2.5 Privacy, changes, and governing law
- Privacy: Data collection and use are governed by our Privacy Policy.
- Changes to Terms: We may update these Terms from time to time. Continued use of the Service after the update means you accept the updated Terms. If you do not agree, you must stop using the Service and may delete your account.
- Governing law and jurisdiction: Governed by the laws of the operating entity and region. Any disputes will be resolved in the courts of that jurisdiction, unless otherwise required by law.
Referral Program
3.1 Purpose and eligibility
We may offer a “refer a friend” program where you can invite others via a unique code or link and earn extra book-creation quota when conditions are met. The program, including reward amounts and eligibility, may be adjusted or discontinued at any time in accordance with our company and operational policy. The program may not be available in all regions. Participation is subject to these terms and the then-current program rules as shown in the app or on this page.
3.2 How it works
- Base quota: Each user gets a certain number of free books (e.g. 2) under the then-current free plan.
- Referrer reward: When someone uses your unique code or link, completes sign-up, and meets our “valid referral” criteria, you may receive extra book quota (e.g. 1 book per successful referral). Actual amounts are as announced or shown in the app.
- Referee reward: New users who enter a valid referral code at sign-up may receive extra quota (e.g. 1 book). Actual amounts are as announced or shown in the app.
- Reward amounts and caps (if any) are set by our backend and may change without prior notice.
3.3 What counts as a valid referral
We define “valid referral.” In general, the new user must: (a) complete registration in the app, (b) not have already received free tier benefits under the same identity (e.g. same device or same email), and (c) not be part of fraud or abuse. We do not honor rewards from fake accounts, bots, multiple accounts used by the same person, self-referral, or other bad-faith behavior. We may revoke rewards, revoke quota, and suspend or permanently terminate accounts if we determine that a referral was invalid or that you have abused the program.
3.4 Changes, pause, and termination
- We may change reward amounts, pause, or end the program at any time without prior notice, in line with company and operational policy.
- After pause or end, pending referrals (not yet completed) will not earn rewards. Already granted quota will not be taken back, unless we determine abuse or breach of these terms.
- Specific numbers (e.g. books per referral) are set by our systems and may change; the then-current app or official channel applies.
3.5 No abuse
You may not obtain referral rewards by unfair means (e.g. fake sign-ups, self-referral, multiple accounts, or automation). We may cancel rewards, revoke quota, and suspend or permanently terminate your account.
